It's not fake in the context that you're using the word fake, its a persona. She's blatantly stated from the start of her mainstream career that Lady Gaga embodies fame and pop culture and that is her art. She's referred to herself as a great con artist.

People take her way too literally. She's full of contradictions but if you watch her talk about her aesthetic it makes sense. I'm not going to sit here and tell you she isn't self indulgent but she's anything but invalid. Search "Lady Gaga The Fame Era" on youtube and I believe its the third video down. Those interviews pretty much summarize everything, that video also contains the interview where she calls herself a con artist.
